For almost a century now, a method to enhance a person’s smile became available. It is in the form of a thin, shell-like prosthesis placed on the front surface of the teeth to correct dental flaws. Many people nowadays avail of the said prosthesis since it can give them a smile that they have always dreamed of. Curious how dental veneers came about? Continue reading below!
History of Dental Veneers
Dr. Charles Pincus, a Californian dentist who had a lot of clients in Hollywood, invented veneers in 1928. The prostheses made from acrylic are temporarily adhered on the teeth for celebrities to get the perfect smile during shoots. Between the 1930s and 1940s, dentists became aware that regular people and not just actors can benefit from veneers. Many people suffer from tooth loss due to disease, and the restorations available were too conspicuous. In the same year, instead of using acrylic, porcelain and composite materials were used for veneers. However, the problem of bonding the prosthesis for a longer time remained.
In the 1950s, Dr. Michael Buonocore recognized that slightly etching the enamel using a mildly acidic solution can do the trick. The method was even used to create a stronger surface for other restorative treatments and sealants to adhere to. Years passed and dentists continued to find the means to make dental veneers a more durable, stable, and longer lasting restoration.
Drs. J.R. Calamia and R.J. Simonsen combined the idea of Dr. Pincus and Dr. Buonocore in 1982. It resulted in the discovery of a way that makes the tooth surface strong enough to hold porcelain prostheses permanently. Fortunately, dental veneers were modernized, so it became more affordable and accessible to many.
